Who is Eddie Mabo?
Eddie Koiki Mabo was a Torres Strait Islander who is widely known for his involvement in campaigning for indigenous land rights. His fame came when the Mabo Decision was passed by the High Court of Australia, which overturned the legal framework regarding Australian land.
Mabo was born in 1936 on Murray Island, and his knowledge for the land was an inbred passion that was with him from a young age. At the age of seventeen, he was exiled for a prank and moved to Townsville where he began working as a laborer. From there, he became a spokesman for many indigenous groups and his popularity began to increase. It was in this time that he managed to change the law governing Australian Land and Titles. However, his prosperous and influential life was brought to an end when he died from cancer at the age of 56.
